The Songnim 4-dong Saemaul Women’s Association (Vice President Jang Mi-ok) in Jemulpo-gu District, Incheon, held a chobok event on the 10th at the Songhui Village community facility, serving chicken gomtang to about 100 elderly residents from senior centers and other parts of the neighborhood.

The event was organized ahead of the peak summer heat to offer local senior citizens a warm, nutritious meal, check on their health and well-being, and foster a sense of neighborly warmth.

Members of the Saemaul Women’s Association began preparing the ingredients the day before the event and cooked the chicken gomtang themselves, also preparing rice cakes and watermelon, putting together a meal with care despite the hot weather.

Jang Mi-ok, vice president of the Saemaul Women’s Association, said, “We put our hearts into this together with our members, hoping to give even a little strength to the senior citizens worn out by the monsoon rains and heat.” She added, “Though it is a small gesture, we hope it helps our elders get through a healthy summer.”

Kim Ae-jin, head of Songnim 4-dong, said, “I am deeply grateful to the members of the Saemaul Women’s Association, who always practice service and sharing for the local community.” She added, “We will continue to work together with residents so that everyone in Songnim 4-dong can be happy.”

Looking after the health of elderly residents who live alone during the sweltering sambok season is cited as a major community care challenge every summer, and voluntary sharing activities by private organizations, like this event, are seen as helping to fill the gap.
