Rural Development Administration Holds Data and AI Field Application Contest, Awards Six Outstanding Cases

Nine teams from provincial agricultural research institutes compete; grand prize goes to Gangwon paprika diagnosis system

Posted Article No. 53482

The Rural Development Administration (RDA, Administrator Lee Seung-don) held the 2026 Data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Field Application Contest at its main International Conference Hall on July 23, selecting and awarding six outstanding cases. The contest was organized to identify and spread cases in which agricultural data collected from leading farms nationwide, along with artificial intelligence, have been applied to actual farming sites.

The full-cycle agricultural cultivation data development project that formed the basis of this contest gathers information on crop growth (plant height, leaf number, etc.), environment (temperature, humidity, solar radiation, etc.), and management (yield, sales unit price, etc.) from leading farms across the country. This year, it is being carried out at 516 leading farms nationwide, covering 21 crops including tomatoes, strawberries, and onions. The data accumulated in this way is used to develop productivity-improvement models for each crop and serves as foundational material that helps farmers make farming decisions based on data rather than intuition.

Nine big-data survey teams from provincial agricultural research institutes nationwide, having passed regional preliminaries, took part in the contest. Each team presented ways to support the agricultural field using data and artificial intelligence. Judging was conducted by data and AI experts from agricultural research, rural extension, and academia, who comprehensively evaluated data usability, feasibility of field application, and creativity.

The grand prize went to the team led by surveyor Kim Ui-min of the Gangwon State Agricultural Research and Extension Services, which presented a Farming Diagnosis System for Greenhouse Paprika Farms. Drawing on full-cycle paprika data, the team earned high marks for its system that visualizes key indicators of harvest, quality, environment, and sales, and issues farm-tailored cultivation management diagnostic reports using generative artificial intelligence.

The top excellence award was shared by two teams. The team led by surveyor Choi Han-na of the Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services presented Tailoring to Farms with the Value of Data, while the team led by surveyor Kim Nan-jin of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services presented Data-Based Oriental Melon Quality Prediction and Income-Improvement Consulting. Both teams proposed diagnosing the growth status of crops through full-cycle data and artificial intelligence, and delivering the results in forms that farmers can easily understand, such as card news.

Three teams received excellence awards. The team led by surveyor Park Hyo-chan of the Chungcheongnam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services presented an AI-Based Laboratory-Type Multi-Agent Consulting System for Cucumber Cultivation; the team led by surveyor Choi Sin-jeong of the Gyeongsangnam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services presented Filling the Gap of January with Data; and the team led by surveyor Kim Bi-ryong of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan City Agricultural Research and Extension Services presented Overlaying Data onto the Farmer’s Intuition. They proposed systems in which full-cycle data on cucumbers, strawberries, and garlic, together with AI agents, predict growth status and recommend appropriate greenhouse interior environments and moisture management methods.

The cases identified at this contest show that data can be not merely a resource for large-scale research institutions but a practical tool directly linked to the cultivation management and income of individual farms. In particular, the attempts to provide information in forms that farmers can use right away, such as diagnostic reports and card news, are significant in that they translate data and AI technology into the language of the actual field.

Kim Sang-gyeong, Deputy Administrator of the RDA, said, ‘Through this contest, a variety of outstanding cases were identified that effectively solve problems encountered in the agricultural field using data and artificial intelligence,’ adding, ‘We will work to ensure that the data-based field support cases and innovation strategies presented here can spread to agricultural sites across the country.’
