The Fisheries Technology Support Center of Incheon Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Chan-dae) is recruiting 25 applicants for the 9th Incheon Return-to-Fishing School from August 3 to 31, aiming to help city dwellers relocate to fishing villages and to nurture skilled fishery workers. Anyone aged between 18 and 65 may apply.

The Incheon Fisheries Technology Support Center is opening recruitment for trainees of the 9th Incheon Return-to-Fishing School, a program for prospective returnees preparing to build a new life in fishing communities. Applications are accepted from August 3 to August 31, with a total of 25 spots available. Applicants must be between 18 and 65 years of age.

The course runs for five weeks, from September 28 to October 30. It is organized as a comprehensive class covering both fishing-vessel operations and aquaculture, structured as a step-by-step program linking theory with field training. During the first two weeks, trainees receive basic fisheries education and go on field visits essential for settling into a fishing village. Of the following three weeks, one week is devoted to a community-integration program in which trainees stay in the fishing village of their choice and live alongside local residents, while the remaining two weeks are filled with hands-on training led by experts in fishing-vessel operations and aquaculture.

By including a period in which trainees actually reside in a fishing village and mingle with local residents, the program goes beyond skill acquisition to let participants experience life after settlement in advance. The move is seen as an effort to ease the burden of settling alone in an unfamiliar village, so that the decision to take up fishing translates into an actual move.

The 8th class, the first of this year, saw 22 trainees complete the regular course, along with 9 in the refresher course and 9 in the advanced course (certification track). In particular, the certification track newly introduced this year drew a favorable response from trainees by covering 50 percent of the tuition costs for obtaining licenses such as the powered water-leisure craft operator license and the small heavy-equipment license.

To apply, fill out the application form attached to the notice on the Fisheries Technology Support Center website and submit it in person along with the required documents, or send it by mail, email, or fax (FAX 032-440-8874).

Lee Dong-ho, director of the city’s Fisheries Technology Support Center, said, ‘The Incheon Return-to-Fishing School is a field-oriented course where prospective returnees preparing to enter fishing can receive systematic training in fishing-vessel operations and aquaculture.’ He added, ‘We will continue to expand our education programs and provide various forms of support so that those preparing to take up fishing can make a fresh start in Incheon without difficulty.’
