The Incheon Metropolitan Government has called on residents to check the infectious disease situation in their destination countries before departure and to strictly observe preventive measures during their trips, aiming to block the domestic entry of infectious diseases as overseas travel rises during the summer vacation season.

The Incheon Metropolitan Government (Mayor Park Chan-dae) said that as overseas travelers increase with the arrival of the peak summer vacation season, concerns are growing over infectious diseases entering the country, and it asked residents to check the disease situation in their destination countries before departure and to follow preventive measures throughout their trips.

Recently, infectious diseases such as Ebola virus disease, dengue fever, and measles have continued to occur in various countries abroad. In some countries, diseases with a high likelihood of domestic spread, such as cholera and human infections of animal influenza, have also been reported, calling for particular caution from travelers. In particular, regarding the Ebola virus disease outbreak in parts of Africa, the World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended strengthening preventive measures to curb cross-border spread.

Risk information for each destination country can be easily checked online. The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) operates ‘Overseas Infectious Disease NOW’ and the ‘Overseas Travel Destination Infectious Disease Map’ so that travelers can identify the disease risks of each country, providing information on the status of major diseases, preventive measures, and recommended vaccinations by country.

Accordingly, residents planning overseas travel are advised to check the disease situation and preventive measures for their destination country through ‘Overseas Infectious Disease NOW’ before departure, and to consult a medical institution about any necessary vaccinations or preventive medications. If symptoms suspected of an infectious disease—such as fever, rash, coughing, diarrhea, or muscle pain—appear after returning home, travelers must inform the medical institution of their overseas travel history and receive treatment.

During travel, practicing basic preventive measures is above all important. The city stressed the following: wash hands with soap under running water for at least 30 seconds; cook food thoroughly and drink safe water; prevent mosquito bites by using repellent and wearing long sleeves; and, when gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea or vomiting occur, take care in preparing and sharing food.

Jo Myeong-hee, head of the city’s Infectious Disease Management Division, said, ‘During the summer vacation season, the risk of infectious diseases can grow due to increased overseas travel and changes in the climate environment, so it is important to check the disease information of the destination country before departure and take necessary preventive measures.’ She added, ‘During travel, thoroughly practice basic preventive measures such as handwashing, eating safe food, and preventing mosquito bites, and if suspicious symptoms appear, please promptly contact the KDCA (1339) or your local public health center.’
