To mark the 81st Liberation Day, Incheon Metropolitan City held a memorial ceremony at the Memorial Tower in Subong Park, Michuhol-gu, paying tribute to the sacrifice of the patriotic martyrs and independence activists who devoted themselves to the nation’s independence.

The ceremony was arranged to remember the sacrifice of those who gave their lives for the country and to honor their devotion fully in a calm and solemn atmosphere.

The event was attended by some 200 people, including Incheon Mayor Park Chan-dae, Incheon Metropolitan Council Chairman Park Jong-hyeok, Incheon Superintendent of Education Do Seong-hun, the commander of the Army’s 17th Infantry Division, the commander of the Incheon Maritime Defense Command, the deputy division commander for operations of the 2nd Marine Division, the head of the Incheon Veterans Branch, mayors and district heads of Incheon, and members of 13 local patriots-and-veterans organizations including the Incheon branch of the Korea Liberation Association, along with citizens. Attendees wore a rose of Sharon on the left side of their chest, adding to the significance of Liberation Day.

The ceremony proceeded with a moment of silence to console the spirits who sacrificed themselves for the nation’s independence, followed by the laying of flowers, the offering of incense, and a commemorative photo. Mayor Park and other key guests bowed their heads before the memorial altar to honor the patriotism and sacrificial spirit of the forebears, reflecting on the foundation of freedom and peace that the Republic of Korea enjoys today.

Mayor Park Chan-dae stressed, ‘The freedom and prosperity we enjoy today were made possible by the noble blood and sweat of the patriotic martyrs who gave everything for the nation’s independence even amid the pitch-black darkness of 81 years ago.’ He added, ‘While embracing the overwhelming joy and emotion of liberation, we will never forget the noble devotion of the independence activists behind it and will carry it on to the next generation.’

Meanwhile, to mark Liberation Day, Incheon City is working to enhance practical welfare for patriots and veterans, including providing 100,000 won in condolence money per person to the bereaved families of independence patriots. This memorial service and the payment of condolence money go beyond symbolic remembrance to directly attend to the lives of patriots and their families, and are expected to serve as an occasion to carry on the local community’s culture of honoring patriots and veterans.
