Gangseo-gu to Hold 2026 Gangseo Human Care AI Robot Competition at Coex Magok on September 12…Recruiting 80 Elementary, Middle and High School Participants

Teens tackle neighborhood issues like environment, safety and welfare using AI and robotics

Posted Article No. 53640

Seoul’s Gangseo-gu (Mayor Jin Kyo-hoon) is on the hunt for young talent who can use artificial intelligence and robotics to solve community problems. The district announced on the 28th that it will hold the 2026 Gangseo Human Care AI Robot Competition at 1 p.m. on September 12 in Hall B of Le West at Coex Magok, in Magok-dong, Gangseo-gu, and is now recruiting elementary, middle and high school students from the district to take part. The competition is designed to help teenagers build the skills to think through and solve a range of local issues — from the environment to safety to welfare — using AI and robotics.

The district plans to recruit 80 participants in total: 30 in the elementary division (grades 4-6, teams of two), 25 in the middle school division (teams of two to four), and 25 in the high school division (teams of two to four). Students who wish to take part can apply by the 31st by scanning the QR code posted on the Gangseo-gu website and submitting an application. Applications are made individually rather than through schools, so any interested student can apply directly.

The competition will be run as a mission-based contest tailored to each age group’s level. The elementary division will take the form of a robot-piloting showdown, in which students directly operate robots to quickly move recyclable waste scattered around the arena to designated spots. The middle and high school divisions will be project-based competitions in which teams design, build and demonstrate their own robots. Middle schoolers will compete on the theme of neighborhood-tailored robots for a safer residential environment, while high schoolers will pit ideas for AI robots that help elderly people living alone and other vulnerable groups.

Amid growing interest in AI education at schools and in communities in recent years, this competition stands out for going beyond simple coding or robot-assembly skills, instead asking participants to identify problems in their own neighborhoods and devise solutions themselves. In particular, the choice of elderly people living alone and vulnerable groups as the high school theme is seen as an attempt to have teenagers grapple, from their own perspective, with the community’s real-world challenges of an aging population and gaps in care. Because it gives young people a chance not just to learn technology but to use it for the benefit of their neighbors, the event is regarded as having both educational and social significance.

The district plans to comprehensively evaluate participants on creativity, use of technology and presentation skills, and award prizes including the Gangseo-gu Mayor’s Award to outstanding teams. Winning entries will be exhibited at the 2026 Gangseo Youth Future Education Festival in November. Before the main competition, participating students will receive preliminary training throughout August at the Gangseo Career and Job Experience Support Center. The training will cover the basics of AI robotics and project work to flesh out each team’s ideas, aiming to raise the quality of their final entries.

“This competition will be a meaningful opportunity for young people who have learned AI and robotics technology to bring about warm change in their community with their own hands,” said Gangseo-gu Mayor Jin Kyo-hoon. “We look forward to seeing many local young talents who will lead the future take on the challenge and take part.” For more information, contact the Gangseo-gu Office Education Support Division at 02-2600-6979.
