Ongjin County to subsidize sea transport costs for farm machinery repairs on islands

Ongjin County to provide up to 700,000 won per farming household annually for round-trip sea transport of tractors, combines and rice transplanters sent to the mainland for repair

Posted Article No. 54466

Ongjin-gun County (Governor Jang Jeong-min) has launched a new program this year to subsidize the sea transport costs that island farmers incur when moving farm machinery to the mainland for repairs. The initiative is intended to ease the double burden long borne by island farmers compared with their mainland counterparts, helping to ensure timely farming operations.

On the islands, major overhauls of large farm machinery such as tractors and combines are effectively impossible, so when such equipment breaks down, it must be shipped to repair shops on the mainland. The sea transport costs involved are substantial, and there have been persistent calls pointing out that island farmers face a heavier economic and time burden than mainland farmers as a result.

With this issue in mind, Ongjin County has established and is carrying out a new program this year called the “Farm Machinery Repair Sea Transport Cost Support Project.” The core of the project is to subsidize the sea transport costs incurred in moving farm machinery that cannot be repaired on the islands to designated repair shops on the mainland, helping ensure repairs are completed quickly so farmers do not miss the farming season.

The program is open to farmers who are registered as farm business operators and reside in Ongjin County. Eligible equipment is limited to tractors, combines and riding-type rice transplanters that have suffered breakdowns requiring major repairs, such as to the engine or transmission. The subsidy covers the round-trip sea transport costs incurred in moving such machinery between the islands and the mainland for repair, with the support capped at up to 700,000 won per household per year.

Ongjin County expects the subsidy to provide tangible income support for island farmers while also helping boost agricultural productivity by minimizing work disruptions caused by farm machinery breakdowns. The measure is notable for taking into account the particular difficulties facing farming in island areas, where conditions are relatively unfavorable.

An official from the Agricultural Machinery Team of the Technology Extension Division at the Agricultural Technology Center said, “We will actively support island farmers, who face relatively unfavorable farming conditions, so that they can repair their farm machinery and focus on farming without worrying about transport costs.” The official added, “We will continue to actively identify and address difficulties faced by farmers in island areas going forward.”

This press release was distributed on August 6 by the Agricultural Machinery Team of Ongjin County’s Technology Extension Division. Inquiries can be directed to Ryu Han-cheol, the official in charge, at 032-899-3271.
