The Incheon Metropolitan Government and the Incheon Tourism Organization will operate a Traditional Market Mobile Stamp Tour covering 17 traditional markets across the city from Aug. 15 to Nov. 15. Visitors who stop by the markets and nearby attractions with their smartphones are automatically issued stamps, and those who complete a course receive discount coupons, naturally linking market visits with local tourism.

The Incheon Metropolitan Government (Mayor Park Chan-dae) and the Incheon Tourism Organization announced that they will operate a Traditional Market Mobile Stamp Tour in two rounds from Aug. 15 to Nov. 15 as part of the Charming Traditional Market Development Project. The aim is to broadly promote the appeal of traditional markets and breathe new life into sluggish local commercial districts.
The event is divided into a first round (Aug. 15–Sept. 30) and a second round (Oct. 1–Nov. 15). A total of 17 traditional markets across seven districts and counties—including Ganghwa-gun, Jemulpo-gu, Michuhol-gu, Yeonsu-gu, Namdong-gu, Bupyeong-gu and Gyeyang-gu—will take part.
The first-round tour will be held at Sinheung Market, Sinpo International Market, Seokbawi Market, Singi Market, Yonghyeon Market, Yeoulmul Traditional Market, Ilsin Market, Guwol Market and Incheon Moraenae Traditional Market. The second-round tour continues at Sorae Pogu Traditional Fish Market, Jangseungbaegi Traditional Market, Songdo Station Market, Ongnyeon Traditional Market, Ganghwa Pungmul Market, Gyesan Market, Gyeyangsan Traditional Market and Jakjeon Market.
Participating is simple. After selecting a preferred course in the Incheon e-easy (Incheon e-ji) app, visitors who stop by designated points at the traditional markets and surrounding tourist sites are automatically issued stamps via GPS. Because participation requires only a smartphone, with no separate paper stamps or on-site verification, the burden on users has been eased.
The tour courses are organized into 16 themes in all, weaving together traditional markets, nearby historic and cultural landmarks, and the region’s leading tourist destinations. For example, one might visit Sinheung Market and then tour Dapdong Cathedral or the Gindambotungijip (the former market official’s residence in Sinheung-dong). Participants can freely choose courses to suit their interests and schedules, allowing them to combine shopping with a trip around the city center in one outing.
The benefits are substantial as well. Completing each course instantly provides a 5,000-won discount coupon through the Incheon e-easy app, and completing all 16 courses can earn up to 80,000 won in benefits per person. Issued coupons can be used at some 320 affiliated stores within the 17 participating traditional markets. Shoppers can purchase a wide range of goods at reasonable prices—from fresh ingredients, local foods and street snacks to fashion and household sundries.
An English version of the stamp tour is also provided to make it easier for foreign tourists to take part. It is an effort to embrace both domestic and international visitors and expand traditional markets as a point of contact for Incheon tourism.
Kim Sang-gil, head of the city’s Economy and Industry Headquarters, said, ‘Traditional markets are precious local assets where food, sights and human warmth are alive,’ adding, ‘We hope this event will serve as an occasion for more citizens and tourists to discover the diverse charms of Incheon’s traditional markets and return again.’
Attention now turns to whether this stamp tour can offer a fresh reason to visit traditional markets, which have seen fewer visitors amid the rise of online shopping and large discount stores. For consumers in particular, the chance to enjoy discount benefits while touring the region’s historic and cultural landmarks means that shopping becomes an outing in itself.
