“Discovering the Beauty of Korea Through Hanbok” — Catalina Bolaños González Connects Korea and the World Through Culture

A Special Bond with Hanbok Designer Kim Gwang-ja Deepens Her Appreciation of Korean Culture

Volunteerism, Healthcare, Fashion and Regional Culture Expand the Scope of People-to-People Diplomacy

“Seoul Still Amazes Me” — A Special Story of Connecting Korea with the World

[SEOUL = KOREAN TODAY] Catalina Bolaños González, wife of H.E. Patricio Troya Suárez, Ambassador of Ecuador to the Republic of Korea, and former President of the Ambassadors’ Spouses Association in Seoul (ASAS), has shared her experiences of Korean culture, volunteerism, and her particular affection for hanbok.

Since arriving in Seoul in October 2024, Bolaños González has gone beyond the formal role of a diplomatic spouse, actively engaging with Korean culture and local communities through a wide range of exchange activities.

Her deep interest in hanbok and traditional Korean culture, together with the friendships she has developed with Koreans, represents a form of “cultural diplomacy in everyday life” that extends beyond conventional state-to-state diplomacy.

■ From Lawyer to Entrepreneur — Bringing a Wealth of Experience to Seoul

Born in Quito, Ecuador, Catalina Bolaños González is a lawyer by profession.

She began working at the age of 19 while still attending university, gaining experience as an intern at major law firms in Ecuador before moving into the banking sector, where she worked in financial, corporate, and commercial fields.

Seeking to broaden her perspective beyond law and gain a deeper understanding of business and finance, she earned an MBA from Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez in Santiago, Chile.

After returning to Ecuador, she became an entrepreneur in quality-management consulting and financial services. For many years, she was particularly involved in mortgage lending and social housing finance programs.

Reflecting on that period, she said, “Behind every loan was a family that was able to have a home of its own,” describing it as one of the most rewarding experiences of her professional life.

■ A Year as ASAS President — “Solidarity Means Sharing Time Together”

Bolaños González served as President of ASAS for approximately one year, from July 2025 to July 2026.

ASAS brings together the spouses of ambassadors accredited to Seoul. According to institutional background information, the association began its activities in 2009 and was formally established in 2014.

Approximately 40 active members participated in ASAS during her presidency.

Throughout her term, she emphasized solidarity and cultural exchange as two of the association’s most important values.

ASAS members regularly participated in volunteer activities with the Korean Red Cross and also joined its annual charity bazaar.

In December, together with GCEL, ASAS organized a Christmas concert at the Soondukwon Child Welfare Center, where members made donations and shared music, food and gifts with the children.

For Children’s Day, an event was held at Dream Tree Village where members introduced children to the cultures, games, food and music of their respective countries. A campaign among ASAS members also made it possible to donate two bicycles.

Bolaños González particularly emphasized the importance of spending meaningful time together rather than focusing solely on material assistance.

“Solidarity and sharing should not end with simply donating money or goods,” she said. “It is important to spend time together, share our hearts, and create genuine human connections.”

■ Healthcare, Volunteerism and Regional Culture — Building Broader Connections with Korean Society

ASAS also signed a memorandum of understanding with CHA Medical Center to help facilitate access to medical services for members of the international community.

Members attended presentations on advances in medicine and toured medical facilities. With support from the Gangnam Medical Tour Center, they also had an opportunity to learn more about Gangnam’s medical tourism and wellness system.

Their cultural activities were equally diverse.

Members participated in exhibitions, concerts, Seoul Fashion Week, festivals, conferences, and a wide range of other Korean cultural events.

One of the experiences Bolaños González remembers most fondly was a two-day visit to Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and Andong.

Representing 13 countries, ASAS members took part in kimchi-making and hanji experiences, learned about the production of traditional Korean liquor, watched a traditional mask dance performance, and visited important cultural sites including Hahoe Folk Village and Byeongsan Seowon.

She described the experience as “a special way to discover Korea beyond Seoul.”

■ “ASAS Is an Important Support Network for Diplomatic Families”

One of Bolaños González’s priorities during her presidency was strengthening members’ sense of belonging and community.

When the spouse of a foreign ambassador arrives in a new country, even basic aspects of daily life — from choosing schools for children to finding hospitals and understanding the local living environment — can be unfamiliar.

She explained that ASAS can therefore serve as much more than a social organization. It can become an important support network helping diplomatic families adjust to life in a new country.

The association welcomed newly arrived members while also saying good bye to friends whose diplomatic postings in Korea were coming to an end.

Members shared their countries, food, music and personal stories, building friendships naturally within the diplomatic community.

To improve communication among members and promote the activities of the association, ASAS also launched its official Instagram account, @asas_korea_official.

■ From Rome to Seoul — “It Felt Like Moving to Another World”

Bolaños González and her husband arrived in Seoul in October 2024.

Before coming to Korea, they had lived in Rome, Italy, where her husband had previously been posted.

She described the transition from Rome to Seoul as feeling “like moving to another world.”

While Rome is filled with centuries of history and the atmosphere of old Europe, she found Seoul to be extraordinarily modern, technological and systematic.

She was particularly impressed by the way the city’s infrastructure and systems continue to function efficiently despite Korea’s very cold winters and intensely hot summers.

“Seoul still amazes me,” Bolaños González said. “It is such a large and multilayered city that I think you could live here for many years and still continue discovering new places.”

■ Fascinated by Hanbok — “Through Hanbok, You Can See Korean History”

One of the areas that has particularly captured Bolaños González’s interest in Korea is hanbok and traditional Korean culture.

With a longstanding interest in fashion, she explained that she does not simply look at the external beauty of clothing. She enjoys understanding fashion through its historical period, cultural roots and social context.

“Looking at how the forms, colors, fabrics and decorative details of hanbok changed through different dynasties can also help us understand a part of Korean history,” she said.

She finds the contrast between contemporary Seoul fashion and traditional hanbok particularly fascinating.

While black, gray, white and other neutral colors are frequently seen in modern everyday clothing in Seoul, hanbok can feature an extraordinary range of colors as well as flowers, birds, trees, embroidery, shimmering details and elaborate decorative combinations.

■ A Special Connection with Hanbok Designer Kim Gwang-ja — Cultural Exchange Through Fashion and Design

Bolaños González’s appreciation for traditional Korean clothing has deepened through her encounters with hanbok designers and artists in Korea.

She said that she became even more captivated by the beauty of Korea after experiencing the hanbok of designer Kim Gwang-ja.

Through these experiences, she came to regard hanbok not simply as beautiful traditional clothing but as an important cultural symbol that reflects Korea’s history, identity and spirit.

Such cultural connections have also developed into opportunities for Korean and international designers to share their lives, cultures and design philosophies.

The dialogue event “Threads Connecting Two Worlds: Life, Culture and Design,” featuring hanbok designer Kim Gwang-ja and designer Anabel Lopez, was one such meaningful occasion in which different cultures met through the common language of fashion and design.

By bringing together tradition and modernity, Korea and the wider world through clothing and design, the event reflected the same spirit of cultural exchange that Bolaños González has experienced and practiced throughout her life in Korea.

■ A Special Bond with Kim Young-ja’s K-Royal Hanbok — Walking the Runway as a King and Queen of Korea’s Three Kingdoms Period

Bolaños González and her husband also had the extraordinary experience of wearing traditional Korean attire and walking the runway together as a king and queen from Korea’s Three Kingdoms period.

Their special connection with hanbok began at a World Miss University event.

The couple attended the event as judges, where they encountered a K-Royal Hanbok fashion show presented by designer Kim Young-ja.

Bolaños González was deeply impressed by the beauty of Kim Young-ja’s hanbok designs as well as the graceful traditional movements performed on stage by Min Ji-young, director of the Min Ji-young Art Troupe.

The experience further deepened her interest in hanbok and traditional Korean culture.

Min Ji-young later personally taught Bolaños González and her husband how to walk on the runway, how to extend and position their arms, and how to move naturally and elegantly while wearing hanbok.

Bolaños González described the experience as “a very special cultural experience.”

She added that she continues to maintain precious friendships with people she met through Korean cultural events, including designer Kim Young-ja and Min Ji-young.

■ Hanbok and Volunteerism — “People-to-People Diplomacy” in Everyday Life

Catalina Bolaños González’s life in Korea has extended far beyond the formal responsibilities traditionally associated with the spouse of an ambassador.

Spending time with Korean children, visiting different regions of the country, participating in healthcare and cultural events, and developing friendships with hanbok designers and artists have themselves become meaningful forms of people-to-people diplomacy.

Diplomacy between nations is not built solely through cooperation between governments and official institutions.

Small encounters — tasting one another’s food, wearing traditional clothing, learning about different cultures, and becoming friends — can also bring countries and people closer together.

Bolaños González’s life in Seoul illustrates the meaning of this form of “diplomacy through people.”

For her, Korea is no longer simply the country of her husband’s diplomatic posting.

By wearing hanbok, learning about Korean traditions, visiting local communities, meeting people, and sharing her time through volunteer work, Korea has become a special place where new experiences, friendships and cultural connections continue to grow.
