강경록 작가, 베니스 ‘도시이야기展’ 성료…“흔들리지 않는 고목 같은 작가로”

강경록 작가의 개인전 ‘강경록-도시이야기展’이 지난 7월 22일부터 28일까지 이탈리아 베니스 Art Depot ai Biri Gallery에서 열렸다.

이번 전시는 2026년 베니스비엔날레 기간에 맞춰 진행된 위성·병행 전시로, 강 작가가 지속해 온 ‘이야기(Story)’ 연작 가운데 ‘도시이야기’를 중심으로 선보였다.

갤러리 미셸 공동대표로 활동하고 있는 강경록 작가는 2026년 베니스비엔날레 한국작가 특별기획 ‘물의 흔적展’을 기획하는 과정에서 자신의 개인전도 함께 기획하게 됐다고 설명했다.

강 작가는 “비엔날레 기간에 전시가 열리면서 세계 각국에서 찾아온 관람객과 미술 관계자들을 만날 수 있었다”며 “예술의 도시 베니스에서 처음 전시하다 보니 긴장감도 있었지만, 세계 곳곳에서 활동하는 작가들이 작품을 발표하는 모습을 보면서 작가로서 동질감을 느끼기도 했다”고 말했다.

■ 이번 베니스 전시는 강 작가에게 자신의 작품세계를 돌아보는 계기가 됐다.

그는 현지에서 만난 작품들에 대해 “작가마다 자신의 철학이 작품 속에 분명하게 녹아 있다는 점이 가장 인상적이었다”고 평가했다.

이어 “일부 국내 작가들이 특정 유행이나 흐름에 편승해 작품을 제작하고 발표하는 것과 달리, 현지에서 본 많은 작품들은 자신만의 철학을 중심에 두고 있었다”며 “그러면서도 시대에 뒤처지지 않는 실험성과 새로운 표현방식을 보여주는 작품들이 매우 좋았다”고 말했다.

특히 오랜 작가 경력에 안주하지 않고 다시 초심으로 돌아가야 한다는 다짐도 밝혔다.

강 작가는 “가장 크게 느낀 것은 아직 제가 많이 부족하다는 것이었다”며 “몇십 년 작업했고 몇십 번 개인전을 했다는 외형적인 경력의 허울을 벗고 다시 초심으로 돌아가야겠다는 생각을 했다”고 말했다.

이어 “더 공부하고 더 고민하면서 세계 미술의 흐름에 뒤처지지 않는 작가가 되기 위해 더욱 매진해야겠다는 다짐을 다시 한번 하게 됐다”고 덧붙였다.

■ 도시의 야경과 사람들…강경록의 ‘도시이야기’

‘도시이야기’는 강 작가가 지속적으로 작업해 온 ‘이야기(Story)’ 연작 중 하나다.

도시의 야경과 하루 일과를 마치고 집으로 돌아가는 사람들, 거리를 달리는 자동차 등 일상적인 도시 풍경을 소재로 도시 안에서 살아가는 사람들의 다양한 모습을 강 작가만의 시선으로 표현한다.

강 작가는 “도시에서 살아가는 사람들의 모습을 각기 다른 시각에서 표현한 작품”이라며 “도시의 야경이나 일을 마치고 집으로 돌아가는 사람들, 거리를 달리는 자동차 같은 소재 속에서 도시를 살아가는 사람들의 다양한 모습을 저만의 방식으로 희화화해 표현하고 있다”고 설명했다.

현지 관람객들의 반응 역시 작가에게 큰 의미로 남았다.

강 작가는 “해외에도 도시를 소재로 작업하는 작가들은 많지만 저와 같은 스타일이나 표현방식으로 작업하는 경우는 흔하지 않은 것 같다”며 “관람객들로부터 ‘새롭다’, ‘도시의 느낌이 그대로 느껴진다’는 이야기를 들었을 때 오랫동안 이 작업을 해온 작가로서 큰 보람을 느꼈다”고 전했다.

강 작가는 국내전과 해외전을 준비하는 자세에는 차이를 두지 않는다고 강조했다.

그는 “작품은 어느 곳에서 전시하더라도 결국 같은 작품”이라며 “국내 관람객이든 해외 관람객이든 제 작품을 보여드리는 자리에는 항상 같은 마음과 책임감을 가지고 준비한다”고 말했다.

이번 베니스 전시가 앞으로의 작품활동에 미칠 영향에 대해서는 ‘고목’을 비유로 들었다.

강 작가는 “같은 시기에 베니스에서 전시한 세계 여러 나라 작가들의 작품을 보면서 많은 것을 느꼈다”며 “주변의 흐름에 쉽게 흔들리지 않고 오랜 세월 한자리를 지키는 고목처럼 중심 있는 작가로 거듭나야겠다고 다시 한번 다짐했다”고 밝혔다.

■ 작가이자 갤러리 운영자…“함께 나아갈 환경 만드는 것도 중요한 일”

강 작가는 작가 활동과 함께 갤러리 미셸 공동대표이자 관장으로서 국내외 전시와 아트페어, 기획전 등을 추진하고 있다.

그는 작가와 갤러리 운영자의 역할을 함께 수행하는 것이 오히려 장점이 될 수 있다고 말했다.

강 작가는 “아트페어나 기획전처럼 여러 작가님들과 함께하는 자리를 만들고, 그 일을 추진하는 과정에서도 많은 것을 배운다”며 “저 역시 작가이기 때문에 참여 작가들과 같은 눈높이에서 생각하고 소통할 수 있다는 점이 큰 장점”이라고 말했다.

이어 “실력이 있음에도 방법을 모르거나 기회가 부족해 국내외 전시에 참여하지 못하는 신진작가와 작가들이 적지 않다”며 “그분들에게 보다 나은 환경을 만들어 주고 함께 국내외 무대로 나아가는 것 역시 중요한 일이라고 생각한다”고 강조했다.

■ “이야기 연작에 철학 더 깊이 담겠다”

앞으로 강 작가는 자신의 ‘이야기(Story)’ 연작을 더욱 깊이 연구하며 작품세계와 철학을 확장해 나갈 계획이다.

그는 “지속적으로 ‘이야기’ 연작을 공부하고 제 철학을 작품에 더욱 깊게 접목시키고 싶다”며 “궁극적으로는 많은 사람들에게 공감을 얻고 사랑받을 수 있는 작품을 그리는 것이 목표”라고 밝혔다.

한국 작가들의 해외 미술시장 진출에 대해서는 단계적인 경험의 중요성을 강조했다.

강 작가는 “처음에는 신뢰할 수 있는 갤러리스트나 갤러리를 만나 해외 아트페어에 참여해보는 것이 현실적인 방법이라고 생각한다”며 “지속적으로 작품과 이름을 알리고 경험을 쌓은 뒤 해외 개인전에도 도전해보는 것이 좋은 방향”이라고 조언했다.

마지막으로 그는 자신의 작품을 지켜봐 온 관람객들에게 감사의 뜻을 전했다.

강 작가는 “늘 제 작품을 지켜봐 주시고 사랑해주시는 모든 분들께 진심으로 감사드린다”며 “앞으로도 나이와 경력을 떠나 항상 공부하고 배우는 자세로 작업하겠다. 시대의 흐름에 뒤처지지 않는 작가가 되도록 더욱 노력해 더 좋은 작품으로 찾아뵙겠다”고 말했다.

Kang Kyung-rok Holds “Urban Stories” Solo Exhibition in Venice… “I Want to Become an Artist as Steadfast as an Old Tree”

– Solo exhibition held from July 22 to 28 at Art Depot ai Biri Gallery in Venice, Italy

– “I felt the rapid pace of the global art world and realized I must return to my original passion”

Artist Kang Kyung-rok held his solo exhibition, “Kang Kyung-rok – Urban Stories,” from July 22 to 28 at Art Depot ai Biri Gallery in Venice, Italy.

The exhibition was presented as a satellite and parallel exhibition during the 2026 Venice Biennale period and featured works from Kang’s ongoing “Story” series, with a particular focus on “Urban Stories.”

Kang, who also serves as co-director and curator of Gallery Michelle, said that the solo exhibition came about naturally while he was organizing the special Korean artists’ exhibition, “Traces of Water,” during the 2026 Venice Biennale.

“Because the exhibition took place during the Biennale, there were many visitors and art professionals from around the world,” Kang said. “It was my first time exhibiting in Venice, a city of art, so I felt some tension at first. But seeing so many artists from around the world presenting their work also gave me a strong sense of connection as a fellow artist.”

■ A Global Art Scene Rooted in Individual Philosophy

The Venice exhibition became an important opportunity for Kang to reflect on his own artistic practice.

“What impressed me most was that each artist’s philosophy was clearly embedded in their work,” he said.

“In contrast to some trends in the Korean art scene, where certain artists may follow prevailing styles or fashions, many of the works I saw in Venice were firmly grounded in the artists’ own philosophies. At the same time, they were highly experimental and contemporary in their expression.”

Kang said the experience also reminded him not to rely too heavily on his long career.

“The biggest realization was that I still have a great deal to learn,” he said. “Rather than taking pride in having worked for decades or having held dozens of solo exhibitions, I felt I needed to let go of those outward achievements and return to the mindset I had when I first began.”

He added, “I once again resolved to study more, think more deeply, and work even harder so that I can continue to grow without falling behind the changing currents of contemporary art.”

■ “Urban Stories” — Everyday Life in the City

“Urban Stories” is one of the themes within Kang’s ongoing “Story” series.

The works depict various aspects of people living in cities from different perspectives, using familiar urban scenes such as night views, commuters returning home after work, and cars moving through city streets.

“Urban Stories is about observing the lives of people in the city from different points of view,” Kang explained. “City lights at night, people going home after work, cars driving through the streets — these are all ordinary subjects, but through them I try to portray and sometimes humorously reinterpret the many different ways people live within the city.”

The reactions from local visitors were particularly meaningful to him.

“There are many artists abroad who work with the city as a subject, but there are relatively few who use a style or method of expression similar to mine,” Kang said. “When visitors told me that my work felt ‘new’ or that they could ‘really feel the atmosphere of the city,’ I felt that all the years I had spent developing this series had been worthwhile.”

■ “My Attitude Toward the Work Is the Same, Whether at Home or Abroad”

Kang emphasized that he does not make a strong distinction between preparing for exhibitions in Korea and exhibitions overseas.

“The work itself remains the same wherever it is shown,” he said. “Whether I am presenting it to Korean audiences or international audiences, I prepare with the same sense of responsibility and commitment.”

When asked how the Venice exhibition might influence his future work, Kang compared the kind of artist he hopes to become to an old tree.

“I learned a great deal from seeing works by artists from many different countries who were exhibiting in Venice at the same time,” he said. “I want to become an artist who is not easily shaken by trends, but who stands firmly in place like an old tree that has endured for many years.”

■ Artist and Gallery Director… “Creating Better Opportunities for Other Artists Matters Too”

Alongside his artistic practice, Kang is also active as co-director and curator of Gallery Michelle, organizing exhibitions, art fairs, and collaborative projects involving multiple artists.

He believes that being both an artist and a gallery operator can be a significant advantage.

“I learn a great deal while creating opportunities for artists to participate in art fairs and curated exhibitions, and while carrying those projects through,” he said. “Because I am also an artist, I can communicate with participating artists from a similar perspective. I believe that is one of my strengths.”

He continued, “There are many emerging artists and talented artists who have not been able to participate in exhibitions in Korea or abroad simply because they do not know how to access those opportunities. I believe that creating a better environment for them and helping them move forward together is also an important responsibility.”

■ “I Want to Deepen My ‘Story’ Series and My Artistic Philosophy”

Looking ahead, Kang plans to continue exploring his “Story” series in greater depth and further integrate his personal philosophy into his work.

“I want to continue studying and developing my ‘Story’ series while bringing more of my own philosophy into the work,” he said. “Ultimately, my goal is to create artworks that people can connect with, spend time with, and love.”

Regarding Korean artists seeking to enter the international art market, Kang stressed the importance of gaining experience step by step.

“One of the most practical ways to begin is to work with a trustworthy gallerist or gallery and participate in overseas art fairs,” he said. “By continuing to introduce your name and your work internationally and gaining experience, you can eventually take on the challenge of holding solo exhibitions abroad.”

Finally, Kang expressed his gratitude to those who have continued to support his work.

“I sincerely thank everyone who has followed and loved my work,” he said. “Regardless of my age or career, I will continue to study and learn with humility. I will keep working hard so that I do not fall behind the times and can return with even better work in the future.”
