Korea Hanbok Cultural Festival Celebrates the 81st Anniversary of Liberation with a Tribute to History at the National Assembly

Kim Young-ja, CEO of K-Royal Hanbok, Presents a Special Exhibition Inspired by the Taegeukgi, Mugunghwa, Hangul, and Royal Court Costumes

A Celebration of Liberation Through the Beauty of Hanbok

The Korea Hanbok Cultural Festival will take place on August 6, 2026, at the Grand Conference Hall of the National Assembly in Seoul, commemorating the 81st Anniversary of Korea’s Liberation.

More than a traditional fashion event, the festival is designed as a cultural celebration expressing the joy and pride of Korea’s liberation through Hanbok, the nation’s traditional attire. The event aims to honor Korean history, preserve cultural heritage, and inspire future generations through art and tradition.

Kim Young-ja, CEO of K-Royal Hanbok, said, “Hanbok is not simply clothing. It embodies Korea’s history, culture, and national spirit. Through this exhibition, I hope to share the joy of liberation and the beauty of Korean tradition with people around the world.”

Since 2000, Kim Young-ja has been active as a fashion model and organizer of major cultural events, promoting the beauty of traditional Korean attire.

After years devoted to painting and artistic creation, she has returned to the world of Hanbok with a unique vision that combines fine art and traditional costume. The 2026 Korea Hanbok Cultural Festival will showcase many of these original works for the first time.

“Painting and Hanbok are both artistic languages that tell the story of Korea,” Kim said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to once again share our cultural heritage through Hanbok.”

Hanbok Inspired by the Taegeukgi and the Colors of Hope

The highlight of this year’s exhibition is a collection inspired by the Taegeukgi, the national flag of Korea.

Kim Young-ja reinterprets the symbolism of the Korean flag through vibrant rainbow-inspired colors that represent harmony, hope, and the joy of national liberation. Several Hanbok designs incorporate her own paintings, transforming each garment into a wearable work of art.

Mugunghwa, Hangul, and Ancient Korean Heritage

The exhibition also features designs inspired by Mugunghwa, Korea’s national flower, Hangul, the Korean alphabet, and the elegant Wonsam, a ceremonial robe dating back to Korea’s ancient kingdoms.

Poetry and Korean calligraphy are embroidered onto the flowing skirts of the Hanbok, allowing each piece to tell a story about Korea’s identity, history, and cultural pride.

According to Kim, “Every Hanbok should tell the story of Korea.”

Royal Court Costumes Recreated

Visitors will also experience reproductions of traditional Royal Wedding Ceremonial Robes worn by kings and queens during the Joseon Dynasty, as well as the Gujangbok, the royal ceremonial attire symbolizing the dignity and authority of the Korean monarchy.

These historic costumes highlight the elegance and sophistication of Korea’s royal heritage while introducing international audiences to the country’s rich cultural traditions.

Remembering Those Who Dedicated Their Lives to Korea

Beyond celebrating liberation, the festival also pays tribute to those who sacrificed for the nation.

Special recognition will be given to Patriot Jo Sam-rye, an independence activist, and National Merit Recipient Park Gwang-jun, honoring their devotion and service to Korea.

Their stories remind visitors that today’s freedom was built upon the courage and sacrifice of countless patriots.

Hanbok as the Story of Korea

Kim Young-ja emphasized that Hanbok represents far more than traditional clothing.

“Hanbok is Korea’s history, culture, and identity,” she said. “Through designs inspired by the Taegeukgi, Mugunghwa, Hangul, and royal court traditions, I hope people will experience the spirit of Korea and the joy of liberation.”

The Korea Hanbok Cultural Festival is expected to become a meaningful cultural event that unites history, art, and patriotism while introducing the elegance of Korean heritage to audiences from around the world.
